If you aren't familiar with Scott's work (though you are, indirectly, if you've watch any WB cartoons), he wrote such jazz band classics as Powerhouse, Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals, The Penguin, Toy Trumpet and so on. You'd probably recognize all of these if I played them for you. However, this is not that. He also was VERY big into electronic music and was quite hip on the concept of self-composing music machines. He created all sorts of large and bizarre machines that would "compose" away. While working on this stuff, he also ran a jingle agency and sold some of these to back commercials. This is a 2 CD collection of that sort of stuff. Some experiments, some interesting tunes, some electronic recreations of his classics, some archival "footage" and some commercials. Also, there's a nifty Nordine-ish collaboration between Scott and Jim Henson (of Muppets fame). The package is pretty and the liners are huge, complete and extremely well done. I personally found it quite like wandering through a museum. In fact, it was very much like a Smithsonian Recordings release. Also, with 2 CDs including some alternate takes, there's a little much audio for me. I could have condensed it to one CD of truly interesting stuff. However, if you are interested in Scott, electronic music, or interesting audio oddities, you can't do much better. I'm glad I have it, even though I don't listen to it as often as Blonde Redhead or Serge Gainsbourg. :) Peter - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 09:29:18 -0400 From: Maurice Rickard Subject: Thank you, thank you, thank you! And how long has the album been out of print? 1) Yes 2) Depends on what you mean by out of print. I don't think Delmark has been pressing any vinyl for about 10 years at least, so probably that long minimum. When the last copies were actually made, I don't know. But For Alto hasn't been completely out of circulation. Cadence still had it for sale 3 or so years ago. A must have album. I was worried that it may turn out to be one of those legendary historical documents that is far more important for what it is -- the first solo sax album -- than for the music itself. What works really well for me are cheap 30" x 72" 5-shelf units, that I can get as cheap as $30 sometimes at that corporate satan, Wal-Mart. Then I cut 30" and 6" (approx.) lengths of 1 x 6 pine to set into each shelf, to make it a 10-shelf unit. Voila, you've got 25 linear feet of shelving for under $50. Small footprint in your music room, too. You don't even have to nail the pine sub-shelves together; the width of the CDs underneath and the weight of the CDs on top will hold them steady. Cheers, Wm.
