But for some reason many of the prices there for records on my current list are quite high, so cdc is out this round. But what are the other cheap options - places like cdnow can really gitcha on shipping. cheap-cds.com seems an option, but they limit their order sizes to 9 at a time, which annoyed me enough to make me write this request. Composers, at least Hi all: These days I'm only getting the classical books from Koch, so there may well be things coming out in October that I don't know anything about. But I wanted to mention the two listed in the classical release book, since they're both winners. Whichever Zornlister it was who suggested months ago that Bobby Previte release his Miro suite on Tzadik wins the award for prescience - though note from the personnel that this is actually a new studio recording. CHRISTIAN WOLFF BURDOCKS TZA CD 7071 Composer Series Jennifer Choi, Stephen Drury, Fred Frith, Joan Jeanrenaud, Miya Masaoka, Gordon Mumma, Bob Ostertag, Peter Warhaftig, William Winant, Christian Wolff Burdocks / Tuba Song / Trio III For half a century legendary scholar Christian Wolff has created a very personal musical response to John Cage's challenging experiments. Three of his most distinctive compositions receive inspiring performances here by a collection of San Francisco and New York's best and most imaginative performers. Fred Frith, Joan Jeanrenaud, Bob Ostertag, Miya Masaoka and Stephen Drury are just a few of the remarkable players percussion virtuoso William Winant has brought together to pay tribute to the fascinating work of this conceptual visionary, who performs at the piano with an all-star ensemble on his most famous composition Burdocks. Filled with sweeping gestures and meticulous detail, The 23 Constellations of Joan Miro is Bobby Previte's dream project and one that he's been working on for over six years. Performed here with an all-star ensemble, Constellations is beautifully recorded and presented with a lush 36 page booklet containing color reproductions of all twenty-three of Miro's masterpieces. Previte's most original compositional achievment is also his most delightful. The clear and vey dry production make them an exception in the genre though. Nice guitarsolos and highly structured compostions and fast, fast, fast. Mastodon - Lifesblood (ep) Out on Relapse soon (I think next week). This is the new band of ex-Today Is The Day drummer Bran Dailor so you know what to expect in the percussive department. Altough the music has a lot of TITD-elements, they sound a lot heavier with grunt like vocals and thrashy riffing. Jazzy at times, funny samples, but above all fenomenal musicianship. Maybe the most refreshing band on the label, next to Dillinger Escape Plan. I was able to get an early copy from Wayne himself at a recent Seattle 'Pigpen' show (which was also fantastic BTW) I was able to talk to Wayne a bit about the album, and he said that it was the most fun he has ever had in a recording session, that it seemed like the whole thing was coffee breaks and fun times. The only negative he said was that it was being release on 'Avant' limiting it's audience. I find it hard to actually review music so I will just make a few general statements. First off there is a lot more of Tucker Martine's processing on this album, It is still very subtle and laid back but he has really come into his own and working as player in his own right. It is an interesting concept live processing, in that it takes the concept of the "studio as instrument" and makes it into a reality. It can be done live. See track three, "Julian's Ballad" and track four, "People Just Float" for some prime examples of the Martine processing. There is some fantastic work by Julian Priester, especially on the first track "Crispin and Lisa's Duet", but also in various segments of "Leave Here Now". Julian is often used in an almost soundscaping fashion on most the other tracks, notably the final track "Willy's Music". While there is no lyrical singing from Reggie Watts, he does do some nice vocalizations on "Sweeter than the Day". Skerik fans will find some really nice work from him on baritone sax underscoring some really low trombone on "Leave Here Now", which also features all the members well in an almost traditional solo swapping style, but has a more interesting modern flavor to it. This long song is absolutely fantastic, meandering along with solos and duos and increasing in intensity for its whole >10min length. Eyvind Kang shines on "People Just Float" and "From a Window", they latter being the most classical flavored of the album. Wayne of course plays wonderfully almost everywhere, going from sound effects with the Nord to elegant piano, to jazzy rifts on a host of instruments. I love his compositions and this album really highlights some of his best. All in all the album has much the sound and feeling as the first Four Plus One album. It is great headphone music as the the layers of complexity are rich and subtle. - -Robert - - - - Wayne Horvitz, the Four Plus One Ensemble "From a Window" (avant 080) 1) Crispin and Lisa's Duet 2) Sweeter Than the Day 3) Julian's Ballad 4) People Just Float 5) Leave Here Now 6) From a Window 7) Willy's Music Personnel: Wayne Horvitz, keyboards Julian Priester, Trombone Eyvind Kang, Violin Reggie Watts, Keys, Vox Tucker Martine, Live Processing Special Guest Skerik, Baritone Sax - -Robert - -- "Education is experience, and the essence of experience is self-reliance." -T.H. Wow, this review has really got me hot to get a copy of this. > The > only negative he said was that it was being release on 'Avant' > limiting it's audience. I heard once, and maybe I misunderstood what I was hearing, that Zorn puts things out on Avant that he knows will sell well. Mike Rizzi, was I smoking too much Brotzmann that night, or did I hear that correctly? > It is an interesting concept live processing, in that it > takes the concept of the "studio as instrument" and makes it into a > reality. It can be done live. I first got a whiff of this notion from the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, and it's such a fertile concept. Live sound processing as an extension of the art of the improvisor -- what a gas! This really suggests guerilla tactics a la Zorn's game pieces, and I wondered if anybody had heard of any Cobra performances that involved live guerilla remixers/processors as well as instrumentalists.
