Apparently the disc was far busier and stranger _before_ O'Rourke was brought on board. It took his objectivity to whittle down the songs into more manageable and melodic nuggets, believe it or not. In case anyone is wondering, Wilco had been having trouble with Reprise for years. First the label balked at the double album Being There. Then it sent them back to clean up some potential singles for Summerteeth. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was apparently the final straw. The band was told to rework the album or take a hike. Wilco called the bluff and offered to buy back the masters for something like $90,000. In the meantime Reprise started to have a change of heart, once it settled in how stupid a decision they had made, but by then Wilco was set. Supposedly the group is currently juggling some 30 new offers from different labels. I agree that the album is easily one of this year's best (if it's released this year). However, for the benefit of those many who have not yet heard Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the disc really isn't as strange as some have made it out to be. To me its sounds like a happy balance between Being There and Summerteeth. Anyone expecting Wilco's Goodbye 20th Century will be very disappointed. I am Spanish, dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. Should I feel offended by someone calling me "Latino" then? Sorry, but I hate euphemisms. In my country, what was formerly known as GENOCIDE (genocidio) is called now ETHNIC CLEANING (limpieza étnica). Not that it was busier before JOR came on board but because I would not expect that JOR could have any positive impact on song quality... I have no problem with O'Rourke when it is about experimental music, but I have never been impressed by his attempts at writing songs (I know, I am going against THE WIRE on that issue...). What's next? JOR helping Marr and Morrissey at being more concise (in case they decide to play again together)? I haven't yet had a chance to dig into the entire album, but here's what I think so far. I know patRice doesn't dig the group so much and frequently voices that he wishes they would stop playing together so that zorn could get on with other projects. Personally, I don't care how many more live albums Masada puts out (although this seems likely to be the last--at least for a while). I've enjoyed all of them (though i still haven't heard Tapai). At the same time, I've had yet to hear a recording that manages to display the group at their full potential--Until I listened to the first three songs of disc 1 on Live at Tonic. Karaim, once it gets going after the first bit of Zorn's solo is amazing. In every recent live recording or show I've heard, it seems Zorn's been opening with a tune where he plays a long drawn out alto solo (eg. his solo on NE'EMAN from live in sevilla). I'm not a big fan of this more chilled-out zorn. He takes too long to not go very far. However in Karaim, zorn really cooks after a bit. Douglas' solo is excellent--reminds you why he won the downbeat award last year. Ner Tamid sets up Acharei Mot well. The contrast between the two songs charges the momentum on Acharei Mot. Joey Baron has a great solo Acharei Mot as well. Baron is also highlighted on disc two on Shevet. The group seems to be in top form throughout (granted, I haven't had a chance to listen closely to the whole thing). I did notice that Zorn is using less of the extended techniques on the sax. There's plenty of altissimo and overtones play, but I don't think he does either the duck-call sound or the multiphonic thing with the the high pitch above and a lower squawk pitch below (i've got no idea what the technical terms are for those). I really enjoy the album. The tonic performances equal the Montreal show from the Jazz Festival in 2000--if anyone caught that show. If this was the only live album Masada had released, I'd still be satisfied. I don't understand why there was so much hype when sevilla came out last year. Sevilla was good as was Middelheim--this is better. (By the way, if anyone has a good recording of the Montreal 2000 show that they'd be willing to copy for me, please email me.) andy eriedell@aol.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 14:20:55 -0400 From: "Bruno Bissonnette" Subject: What About Me?
