I used to own quite a few of the Melvins discs but traded them away, I sure would like to hear them one more time because the old mind is weak and I can't remember much. But anyway heard the live Melvins album the other day and really couldn't take it. Just like Merzbow, I can't take the harsh stuff. Although I didn't get the joke with the Melvins disc. I held onto both Fantomas discs but maybe you could point me to the one Melvins disc to own again. I sure would like to listen per the posts. I generally like Patton in theory a lot more than I like him in practice, though, and I wish he woulda kept his mouth shut during "Night Goat," cuz it doesn't seem like he knew all the words. Maybe that's not the point, but it's one of Buzz's better numbers. It was fun to hear the audience getting obnoxious and surly during Dave and Dale's hi-hat duet, though. I need to buy more Melvins, that's for damn sure, and I was stupid not to see them last year. "24 Hour Party People" is great fun for Factory fans - a mythic/comedic version of events from the legendary (of course) performance of the Sex Pistols in Manchester to Joy Division / New Order / Hacienda / Acid House / Happy Mondays / Factory bankruptcy. Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson in the style of his TV-presenter character Alan Partridge, and the film is littered with cameos by manc legends - Howard Devoto, Vini Reilly, Mark E Smith, Paul Ryder etc etc. It's really worth a trip to the cinema... Can anybody explain the difference between Haco, Tenko >and Phew? this is an odd question. what's the difference between female japanese vocalists? what's the difference between john butcher, evan parker and andy mackay, for that matter? haco is more a pop singer, and in no way do i mean that as a slight. she's fucking amazing. really sweet songwriter, nice improviser, good sense for different projects. hoahio on tzadik is one of the best and probably one of the easiest to find. the first 'after dinner' record (probably her most famous group) and her more recent 'happiness proof' have been reissued domestically (US), and are both nice. phew is more proggy and likes to kick with the krautrockers. she's more in line with dagmar krause in vocal style, i suppose. somebody talked down her group novo tono here recently, but i really like it (probably because i'm not much a progger, and it has otomo and seichi yamamoto). tenko is probably the most experimental of the three, and goes more into vocalese than lyrics than do the others. her two discs with ikue mori (death praxis and murder mystery) are quite good. some of her stuff (titles escape me) feels a little aimless, but those are pretty hard to find now anyway. and in re chadbourne's 'ayler undead', i disagree. there's a lot of ayler there. of course, there's no horn, but i think chadbourne really carries the spirit and the themes are recognizable. really a great record. chad's growth in the last few years, methinks, has been as an ensemble player. 'pain pen' is a good example. this is a trio with an italian rhythm section, and they all play nicely together. few solo chad trax, too. kurt the rainbow child _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 08:59:44 -0700 From: "s~Z" Subject: Re: Eugene Chadbourne >>>EUGENE CHADBOURNE: "Country Music In The World Of Islam"<<< First Chad I ever heard. The Digidesign website has all the answers to all our questions. In fact, under the FAQ pages the very first question is "why do i hear a delay when monitoring the input signal?" - it's a universal problem with all pro tools. it seems if you don't have some kind of super computer to run the program on your just screwed. They suggest you just monitor the instrument being recorded through an outbaord mixing console, split the signal using a direct out to send to pro tools, and then mute that track on the pro tools mixer. kinda strange, but apparently a common problem. they have several pages on other FAQ that i found very helpful including how to optimize your pc for use with pro tools. many many thanks to all that helped me with this query. www.digidesign.com/support/faq/ptfree.html.en no longer frustrated - mike t. - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2002 23:47:33 -0400 From: "Nirav Soni" Subject: Fw: [nyhappenings] MEREDITH MONK + more oh wow.
